Lake House

4 King St, Daylesford, 3460

Lake House is a tranquil retreat that includes rooms and suites in either a waterfront or lodge setting. Six acres of abundant and fruitful gardens extend down to the waters of Lake Daylesford and provide guests with immediate access to the lake shore and the Wombat State Forest beyond.

Given the opportunity to explore the grounds, guests will come upon the Kitchen Garden planted out with herbs and edible flowers. Orchard areas include olives, crabapple, stone fruits, apple, quince and medlar. The earliest plantings of stringy barks, Yunnan and Lombardy poplars and pin oaks now form a canopy over the site and are populated with rosellas, currajongs, gang gangs, cockatoos and kookaburras.

A myriad of sculptures and artwork from some of the region's top artists are dotted around the garden. Extensive outdoor lakefront terraces, or quieter nooks like the pavilion overlooking the full sized tennis court offer the opportunity for a quiet drink or the pleasure of a leisurely peruse of the papers. A large lounge with open fire, billiards and a good selection of reading materials, is a popular destination in cooler weather. A DVD library of classic favourites affords additional opportunity to cocoon and relax indoors.

Lake House Restaurant

Produce is often handpicked for a morning delivery. Local lamb, rare breed pork, grass fed beef, fresh water fish, sheep and goat's milk cheese, heirloom fruit from old orchards and windfalls from local gardens arrive at the kitchen, which since the early eighties, has fostered an open door policy, mentoring and supporting small sustainable producers and growers and developing a local food culture amongst fellow restaurateurs, chefs and residents.

During the day, the sunlit restaurant offers magnificent views through wonderfully large windows. Guests enjoying drinks at dusk on the outdoor terraces will witness the daily ritual of our resident kookaburra family flying in to be fed.

Lake House Accommodation

All residential guests receive complimentary car parking, porterage, daily newspaper and internet access. Access to our cult & classic DVD library and use of the full size tennis court is also complimentary.

Weddings & Events

Think misty days and starry nights, open fires and candlelight. Delicious feasts to bring people together.

It's the most beautiful time of year in Daylesford - bare silver branches glow with iridescent green lichen and dew drops, white frost covers almost everything in the morning before trickling away as the gentle winter sun rises over Wombat Hill and gives way to clear sky days. Guests arrive in warm woolen coats, scarves and gloves - rosy cheeked in anticipation for the day's festivities.

Long shared tables are set with winter roses and a feast is served up paired with delicious wines from the award winning cellar. The last of the local quinces, chestnuts and wild forest mushrooms feature on the early winter menu. Late varieties of pear and apple are still showcased as the best of the season's citrus comes to the fore. Produce from local farms, much of it organic, is our kitchen's dream. Pumpkins, beetroot, carrots, celeriac, black cabbage, kohlrabi, long stems of brussel sprouts and a myriad of varieties of local potatoes make for a delicious feast. Paired with the robust flavours of local venison, beef, wild rabbit and pork - all that's needed are some special drops selected by our sommelier.

In the evening the mist gathers again and encourages people to gather around the open fire - glass of red in hand. It's oh-so romantic...
